Although I read constantly, probably more than the average person. I don’t think I have ever read a full length Christmas novel.
However, this year I decided to try and read a festive book, set on a Christmas tree farm, although not solely based on Christmas. It is has more of a winter and festive vibe rather than outright just a Christmas Book.
I have heard about B.K. Borison online, from reviews on Instagram and TikTok, and I was definitely influenced! I also may or may not have purchased the full series on my Kindle, before even reading the first book, but I was determined to read the books (at least the first one) in their accompanying season.
Hence starting this series at the beginning of the festive period.
Lovelight Farms follows Stella, the owner of Lovelight Farm, who is having financial troubles due to random circumstances that keep going wrong on the farm. Due to this she decides to apply to be featured by an influencer, where she could win a huge amount of money, however, she lied on her application and said she owned the farm with her boyfriend. The issue is… Stella doesn’t have a boyfriend.
She enlists her best friend Luka to be her fake boyfriend for the week to keep up the facade for when the influencer arrives. However, when one touch doesn’t feel like they’re faking anymore, the line between friendship and love begins to blur, they must face the fact that this may have been a long time coming.
This book is filled with heart and found family. From the first chapter I was drawn in, and I was invested. Within the first chapter you have already gained a good understanding of Stella as a person, overthinking and paranoid about the situation she has put herself in, and her friends who happen to work on the farm with her. This opening sets up the book perfectly, and also introduces us to the characters that will later have their own book in this interconnected standalone series.
From the first chapter you can tell that there is tension in the friendship between Stella and Luka, nothing negative but more that there is something unspoken in the way they interact and show up for each other. Whether that be for support or just a quick chat or movie night, they both value eachother’s time, probably more than they both wish to admit.
The tension only begins to build as their fake relationship continues. When one small action, from hand-holding to walking around her small town declaring their relationship, Stella realises she doesn’t want this to end, but she also doesn’t want to lose her best friend for the risk of something more, no matter how much or how long she has wanted it to be.
From beginning to end, I was invested in the plot. Although I have read many romance novels, I was not bored by the plot or felt as though it was repetitive. The characters create a interesting, but also relatable, atmosphere that make them feel like real people, not just characters made up on a page to fulfill a target in the plot. Their relationship felt like a natural progression, and it wasn’t a insta-love plot once they started their fake relationship. I was impressed by this book, and was glad I waited to read it during the festive season, but I cannot wait to read the following books in the series as all of the supporting characters were interesting and fun to read about, so I cannot wait to read their individual books. 🎄💝
